For the seventh year, Penny Evans, an independent consultant with Thirty-One Gifts, asked customers and friends to sponsor bags and businesses to donate personal care items for cancer patients at VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital. Penny, her husband Sep, and son Jonathon Evans were able to facilitate 400 bags donations to patients at the Hendrick Cancer Center and the Solari Radiation Therapy Center. That’s twice as many bags as they donated in 2022.

Kayla Trask, director of radiation and medical oncology, says these items help patients through their cancer journey.

“These bags will go to new patients with a cancer diagnosis undergoing treatment, whether it’s radiation or chemo,” she said. “They even donated several wigs and wig shampoo, thinking of everything! It’s heartwarming how much our community cares about our patients.”

Penny Evans expressed her gratitude to all the people who had a hand in this project. 

“We doubled our total from 2022 in a matter of days,” Evans said. “I really appreciate the community sponsoring bags, businesses donating items and making this possible.”

The bags were filled with pocket calendars, tea bags, fuzzy socks, pens/pads, mints, lip balm, digital thermometers, manicure kits, tissues, cell phone holders, candy, hand sanitizer, Mary Kay hand lotion, motivational card, drink koozies, pencils and car window scrapers.
